An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced perioperative nurse leader to join a well-established private surgical service in Dunedin as a Clinical Nurse Leader – Day Surgery.
This is a hands-on leadership role overseeing the coordination and day-to-day flow of a busy Day Surgery Unit across:
Theatre
PACU
CSSD
Admissions
The service covers a range of specialties including:
Gastroenterology
Colorectal Surgery
Gynaecology
General Surgery
Bariatric Surgery
Non-surgical Gastroenterology services
About the Role
You will play a key role in ensuring the smooth operation of the perioperative service while supporting both patients and staff throughout the surgical journey.
Key responsibilities include:
Coordinating daily patient flow and theatre activity
Supporting staff allocation and workflow across perioperative areas
Providing clinical leadership and escalation support
Assisting with rostering, quality initiatives, and service coordination
Working closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, nursing teams, and administration staff
This role sits within a wider leadership structure, reporting to a non-clinical Practice Manager . You will work alongside three other team leaders (Endoscopy, Practice Nurses, and Admin) and collaborate closely with the Endoscopy Team Leader.
The Theatre Team Leader oversees a perioperative team of:
2 permanent theatre nurses (supported by casual theatre nurses as required)
2 permanent PACU nurses (supported by a casual nursing pool as required)
2 anaesthetic technicians
2 CSSD technicians
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys leadership while remaining clinically involved.
About You
To be successful, you will bring:
Current NZ Registered Nurse APC
Minimum 3 years’ Theatre/Scrub experience
Previous leadership or shift coordination experience
Strong perioperative knowledge and clinical decision-making skills
A collaborative and patient-focused approach
Experience across PACU, CSSD, or quality improvement is highly regarded.
